What is Behind the AKA?
Katie traces her eclectic spirit back to her name. Her trailblazing mother bestowed upon Katie her own first name, Sara. Logistics got in the way of progress and rather than becoming a true JR she was called by her middle name, Kathryn. Katie was soon added to the list of names she was called by. Each name is uniquely part of her yet others seem to find one name or another more suitable. This unique human relationship with words and objects, or people as it is in this case, is fascinating and a frequent source of inspiration for artists. Magritte, surrealist painter, is well known for his exploration of the connection between words images and reality. In his painting La Trahison des images (Ceci n'est pas une pipe) translated The Treachery of Images (This is not a Pipe) Magritte simply renders a classic wooden smoking pipe with a statement beneath it. Ceci n'est pas une pipe. How can this be? One Might wonder what else Magritte could've imagined he was painting, other than a pipe. But a moments thought and your realize the game. A painting of a pipe is a more precisely accurate description of what you are viewing, is it not? After all, in order to qualify as a smoking pipe do you not need to be able to hold it? Smoke from it, even? Magritte was entirely correct in his statement, but this was more than an opportunity to split hairs. Magritte was commenting on the nature of our relationship to words and images, putting forth an observation and awaiting the response.
